So, I am in search of a braille alarm clock. I realize that these are kind of old
fashioned, but here's my thinking. It is very easy to lose a phone, have it die,
get lost, get left in someone's car, fall out of your pocket, or just get left in the
living room when you go to bed. So its not a dependable system to wake you up
in the morning. I also hate all things talking, if they came out with a braille
iphone, I'd get one in a heartbeat. I find talking things to be obnoxious and
limiting. So, I'm looking for a braille alarm clock. But that presents me with a
problem. It seems that no one makes good ones.
Now, I'm aware that there are some braille alarm clocks on the market. I've
owned one, and I've seen a couple others. However, without fail, they suck.
They're made of cheap crappy plastic, they're light and flimsy, the hands never
stay in place, and they generally look like crap. I'm talking here of the ones with
the plastic removable faces and plastic everything else that just beep. What I'd
love to find is one of the old fashioned alarm clocks with the hammer and two
bells that I could use, but I haven't seen any where a blind person could set the
hands and the time without sighted help.
So, does anyone know of a non-shitty, quality, good looking braille alarm
clock, or am I once again cursed by the seeming inability of the market to
provide us with anything that actually is accessible and looks like a grown
person would want to use it?
Interesting search.
Try independent living aids.
make that a web address and you can call or email your question.
They have braille devices.
I do agree, everything doesn't need to talk too.
I did, they had the cheap plastic one. Even amazon has that, and it barely has a
one star rating on there.
Try the printing house for the blind.
Might be the product just didn't sale, so isn't being produced anymore.
You could buy a regular quality clock, then get clear gymo tape and stick it on the numbers.
It is clear, so won't deface the clocks appearance.
Buy one that is wood, or something the tape will stick to best.
I remember one years ago that was square-shaped and had a hard plastic casing and a hinged lid. No idea what brand, though.
When I was out, I thought about clocks that just have regular numbers you can feel.
You don't have to have a braille clock, just one with raised numbers.
I have seen coke clocks with the face uncovered and you could feel them. Maybe get an old style one and have the glass removed? I use to have one of those cheep braille one and they were kind of cool but cheep.
This might be a great wood work project that could be done.
Use either wood glewed or mettle pegs for the dots.
I think it is really great.
I need to get a new braille cooking timer, mine stops working half way through.
